About the tribunal

Agriculture and Agri-Food Protection Tribunal

AAPT is an independent, quasi-judicial tribunal formed by merging the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal (AFRAAT) and the Normal Farm Practices Protection Board (NFPPB) under Ontario’s Protecting Ontario’s Food Independence Act, 2026.

The tribunal provides an independent, accessible avenue of appeal on a wide variety of agricultural issues. Members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council and bring diverse expertise in agriculture, law, drainage, marketing, and food production.

Upcoming Changes

Ontario is proposing to merge the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal (AFRAAT) and the Normal Farm Practices Protection Board (NFPPB) into a new tribunal — the Agriculture and Agri-Food Protection Tribunal (AAPT).

This change will streamline services and reduce red tape. There will be no disruption to current services during the transition.
